Abstract
To analyze the repeatability of various distance phoria tests and compared phoria measured by eight different tests, we performed the test and retest with the forward and reverse of Von Graefe and Maddox rod methods, and flashed presentation and continuous presentation with Modified Thorington and Howell card methods on 48 students of the Kimcheon college.
Von Graefe method showed the lowest among other tests in repeatability, whereas Howell showed the highest repeatability. The mean of phoria between Von Graefe and Maddox Rod were not statistically different both of forward and reverse values, but for both of Modified Thorington(p = 0.000) and Howell(p = 0.009), there was a tendency of high exophoria on the continuous presentation compared with the flashed presentation.
Also, Von Graefe had about 0.87¡â of deviation range which has the result in by measured with prism alignment is higher than that of Maddox Rod which has about 0.54¡â, but in using a scale for phoria measurement, the deviation range of Howell which has about 0.93¡â is higher than that of Modified Thorington which has 0.86¡â, and that is not significantly different(p = 0.485).
Von Graefe for phoria measurement is 0.40¡â higher toward exophoria than Maddox Rod, which is not significantly different(p = 0.191) and Modified Thorington is 0.41¡â higher toward exophoria than Howell card, which is significantly
different(p = 0.003).
In conclusion, this study considered to be useful in analysis of the repeatability of various phoria tests or the accuracy of clinical measurements of distance phoria.
